Temple Of Kwan Tai Receives Community Foundation Grant

Foundation: Community Foundation of Mendocino County

Every year, kids in Mendocino, Calif., get to parade down Main Street in traditional Chinese regalia as part of a celebration for the Chinese New Year.

But this year, thanks to a $2,100 grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County, the kids won't have to cross Highway 1 to get to the parade's starting point, reports the Press Democrat.

Instead, they'll walk to the nearby Temple Kwan Tai, where they'll be given docent-led tours of the 170-year-old Taoist temple.

"The parade is one of many cultural activities the Temple sponsors for local students to learn about the history and influence of Chinese citizens in Mendocino," says Lorraine Hee-Chorley, who's a direct descendant of Chinese immigrants who settled in the area in the mid-1800s, per the North Coast Journal.

Hee-Chorley's great-great-grandmother was one of those immigrants.
